Domestic Violence

With all the advancements women have made, Domestic Violence among women still continues at an alarming rate. It is also still kept in the background and silent, not as much as in the old days, but none the less it’s still one of those “secrets.” However, with the many wonderful organizations, hard work and determination of the many men and women who dedicate their lives to putting an end to Domestic Violence, there is much hope. Here are a few phone numbers that may help you or someone you know get out of their abusive relationship.

National Domestic Violence Hotline – 1-800-799-SAFE. You can get information on the nearest shelter or program in your area to get the help you need to escape your abusive relationship.

Also on their website, they list various upcoming charity events you can help out with and they also list ongoing volunteer opportunities!! Okay, now on to the rest of my Charities!!

Just in case you haven't been to this part of the website before, this is where you will find Charities that I personally have worked with or have seen in action. Each of them have helped to better the lives of so many people. The staff's and volunteer's of these organizations give their lives to their cause, and in a day of such selfishness, I find that to be incredible!

And now, onto a cause that is as near and dear to my heart as anything I can imagine... the men and women of the United States Armed Forces. Whatever branch you serve in, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts. If you want information on how you can help our brave women and men who serve this country and protect us every day, just go to the website www.ourmilitary.mil. Once you log on select the category in which you can provide your donation.  That is where you will find these amazing non-profit organizations that cover sooooo many categories... Send Packages, Help for the Wounded, Letters and Messages, Military Family Support, Phone Cards, and so much more. You will find so many ways you can help and be excited by all the ways you can help our men and women serving this fine country.

There is so much inner turmoil, guilt, disgust, power/control, loneliness, betrayal, just to name a few when you have an Eating Disorder, I know these are some of the things I felt with my Eating Disorder. This can be such a personal thing, reasons for having an eating disorder seem to vary from person to person so I wanted to make sure there were plenty of phone numbers to call and get help, get information or talk to someone who understands if you are not ready or ready to take that step. Thanks to all the wonderful listener's who called or e-mailed me with references.

"The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society" - Adults, teens, kids, there is no prejudice with this cancer. As a matter of fact every 5 minutes an American is diagnosed with leukemia, lymphoma, or myeloma. The Society is working toward finding a cure as well as providing support groups, public health and professional education along with community service programs. I truly enjoy raising money for this organization. They have really worked hard to come up with creative ideas and ways to get the community involved and money raised for such a worth while cause.

"Ride to Walk" is a non-profit therapeutic horse riding program for children with neurological disabilities.

What an amazing charity this is to work with, I have learned so much. The children have such great attitudes and strength. The parents, of my gosh, such wonderful people, never once have I seen them look at their child as if something was wrong with them, it's a beautiful thing.

What Ride to Walk does is take each child's individual need and match them up to a horse. On that horse the child rides while volunteers are on foot on each side of them and the horse and then there is a person who is leading the horse with a lead rope. The volunteers then help the child with his or hers individual exercises to help with such things as motor skills, posture, exercises to help them walk better,etc.. whatever their neurological disability is there is an exercise to help improve the child. It's so cool how the horse is also helping the child. If you live in the Sacramento area and would like to volunteer just call 916 - 434-0693, you don't have to be an expert horse person, the staff will train you on how to be around horses and if you have a child you feel would benefit from this program call the same number.

Help Oak Park Pre-School!!!

Oak Park Pre-school is in desperate need of donations. The school has been around since 1966 and was founded by Eta Gamma Omega Chapter, Alpha Kappa Alpha Inc. The school is free (that's not a misprint... it's free!!!) to children ages 3 and 4 whose parents otherwise could not afford to send their children to pre-school. By helping young children get a good start in a nurturing, caring environment, they are given a greater opportunity to be positive successful members in our community. Their curriculum consists of physical, mental, and cognitive development activities. They teach age appropriate behaviors and encourage self independence for the individual child. This amazing place does so much for the community. If you've been blessed in life and can afford to help out some amazing children who could really use it, or if you've been in a place in your life once where someone's helping hand was a turning point in your life and you want to give back, this is such a worthy and wonderful place to give your support. Please help to protect this most precious resource and donate what you can!

For information on how you can help, just call this number...

"Big Brothers Big Sisters" matches adults with young children to provide a one to one friendship to boys and girls, primarily from single parent homes. The Big Brother or Big Sister does not replace the parent or other family relationships. They enhance family life by providing friendship, support and guidance. The results of this program are incredible, children show an increase in self-confidence and motivation , an improvement in their academic performance, and better relationships with family members and peers. For the Greater Sacramento Area you can call 916-646-9300 or log on at http://www.bbbs-sac.org/. For other areas do a search engine on Big Brothers Big Sisters to find out if there is one in your community.

"Ronald McDonald House Charities" What an awesome group of people, with such dedication and compassion. If your not familiar with this charity, basically there is one in almost every town, normally located near a major hospital. Reason being, when a family has a tragedy occur with their child and the family finds themselves having to leave their home to be near their child in the hospital, Ronald McDonald house puts the family up in the house and is there to help guide the family through the hard time. All the families I have spoken with while doing fundraisers for this charity, say they have no idea what they would have done or how they would have gotten through their tough time without Ronald McDonald House. There are many levels of volunteerism if you would like to find out what would fit you and your schedule, in Reno call 775 - 322 - 4663 and in Sacramento call 916 - 734 - 4230 or check out rmhc.org for one in your area.
