March 5th, 2012 -- The Joy Of Chickens
The number one question asked when you go on vacation from work is “where are you going?” and “what are you doing?” well this go round I knew I just wanted to lay low and relax, I am such a go go go person that having no plans, just relaxing and do whatever or nothing sounded super good! What also sounded super good was hanging out with our chickens!? I know probably sounds very weird to you! So when asked what I was gonna do, I said “well I really am looking forward to seeing the chickens every morning!.” Obviously with the hours we work, I leave our house at like 3:45 in the morning, so the only time I get to let the chickens out of their coop is on the weekends and I gotta tell you there is such joy walking up to their coop first thing in the morning with all their 17 heads popping up looking out their big window waiting to start their day so they can run all around the property, I love seeing that!
Once their chicken door is open they all run out so excited to see what treat is brought for them in the morning, they love bread and the leftover pig feed we have. Once they chow on the morning treat they run out one by one from their chicken pen out to the property to free range all day, eating grass and giving themselves dirt baths! Some of the chickens have started laying eggs and one of them doesn’t use the nesting boxes we have for them she likes to jump on top of the hay feeder and lay them there which of course we don’t encourage, this is one of the things of having your chickens free range at some point you have to keep them in their coop for a few days to remind them to lay their eggs in their nesting boxes otherwise you will find eggs all over your property hidden in different places in our case the hay feeder!…anywhoooo this chicken each morning would run over to the goats stall door waiting for me to open it so she could lay on top of her eggs that she laid the evening before, little did she know we already gathered them, so she would just run off back with all her girlfriends enjoying the sun, grass and all the free space.
I swear an hour can go by and I am still watching all of them frolicking around….the Rooster is damn protective of all his gals he makes sure he knows where they all are at all times, at some points he must think there is danger ahead because he gives a shout out to all his girls and they all run under a tree or the chicken coop and then when he thinks its all clear they start roaming around again….so funny to watch. And if you think Roosters just crow in the morning not true, he is crowing all throughout the day! Just being out there with all the sounds of the animals watching them in their world is truly joyous and a great escape from reality! The last funny thing I like to watch is when you are leaving the pasture two of the chickens will run behind you all the way up to the gate, my husband and I aren’t sure if they are politely walking us out saying thanks for visiting or saying bye, get out!! Wonderful!
