NIGHT OF HOPE
Friday, November 13, 2009
Citizen Hotel
Sacramento, CA

Proceeds from this event benefit the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network, a non-profit organization dedicated to advancing research, supporting patients, and creating hope for those affected by pancreatic cancer. Pancreatic cancer is the fourth leading cause of cancer death in the United States, yet receives less funding per patient than other leading cancer killers. Your participation in this event will help us make a difference in the lives of the over 42,000 Americans diagnosed with pancreatic cancer this year alone.

Please join the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network on Friday, November 13, 2009 for Night of Hope at the Citizen Hotel. Enjoy hors d’oeuvres, a raffle and a silent auction as we create awareness, raise funds and meet others who share the same goal: to find a cure for pancreatic cancer!

Register online at www.pancan.org/nightofhope09 for $60, which includes hors d’oeuvres, one drink ticket and valet parking. You can also register at the door for $75, but that does not include valet parking or a drink ticket. Join us and have a great time supporting a great cause!

For more information about this event, please contact

If you haven’t seen this video yet, you have to!! It totally makes me sob! The strength and courage of this father and son team is truly inspirational. They are Dick and Rick Hoyt who have been in numerous marathons and triathlons, all while Rick the son has Cerebral Palsy. They have been doing this now for the past 25 years and more. While Dick runs, Rick is in the wheelchair he is pulling, when Dick cycles Rick is in the seat pod from his wheelchair attached to the front of the bike and when Dick swims Rick is in a small but heavy boat being pulled by Dick, you just have to see this! The 2 of them have also dedicated their lives to the physically challenged by forming the Hoyt Foundation. Sure hope you enjoy this story as much as I have!!!

Well with all the talk this week about Jessica Simpson’s weight gain, I thought it only appropriate to update this section of the Charities page. I don’t care that she was a sex symbol at one time and that she was proud to sell herself that way, whoop dee dooo, it by NO means, means she has to put herself thru unhealthy low calories and workouts just to please the eyes of the public, a girl can change her mind as to what shape SHE is comfortable being in that is HEALTHY for HER BODY TYPE …The fact that we STILL to this day are so hateful and judgmental of a Women’s body just blows my mind, the fight marches on…someday ladies we won’t be given unrealistic expectations….no actually someday we as women will finally be confident enough to NOT CARE!!!! In the meantime I have a few pointers to finally get us on our way…

1. QUIT having the fat conversation with your friends. I recently was around some ladies in their late 50’s and early 60’s and they were STILL talking about how unhappy they were with their bodies…..huh??? I don’t know about you, but I really don’t want to STILL be having that conversation at that age. Wouldn’t you rather be at a point of peace and contentment for the beautiful body that has carried you this far???

2. QUIT saying you are fat. Hey maybe you do have some weight to lose because it would be HEALTY for you, and using negative terms toward yourself does not help you to reach your healthy goal.

3. QUIT wanting to lose weight for acceptance, do it because it would be HEALTHY for you.

4. QUIT comparing yourself to other women’s bodies. There are so many different shapes, sizes and body frames that no matter what you put yourself thru, if you have an hourglass figure you will NEVER have a curve less body type.

5. START embracing the body God gave you.

6. START loving you, your mind, your talents, your heart and your soul.

7. START finding what you do like about your body and highlight that.

8. START complimenting your girlfriends on other things besides their bodies.

And finally…..

PLEASE Mother’s let your daughters know they are worthy for who they are and not what their body looks like and not only tell them that but be their living example of it, words mean nothing if they are not backed up with action. Children hear our fat talk. Children hear us complain that we have gained weight. Children hear you getting upset by the scale. Trust me I know father’s are very important for a girls self esteem, however daughter’s look to their mother’s when it comes to body issues, make yours a positive one.

There is a girl I know who has the most AMAZING mom when it comes to body issues. She said growing up her mother never encouraged dieting, she encouraged moderation eating and exercise. This friend of mine said that whenever she had heard of some diet, she would ask her mom to let her be on that diet, and her mother would let her know that diets don’t work, it’s about a lifestyle change and exercise is a very important part of that. This girl of course has no crazy issues with food, is not overweight or underweight, imagine that!

In closing here are a couple more hopefully helpful eating disorder organizations for you.

Domestic Violence

With all the advancements women have made, Domestic Violence among women still continues at an alarming rate. It is also still kept in the background and silent, not as much as in the old days, but none the less it’s still one of those “secrets.” However, with the many wonderful organizations, hard work and determination of the many men and women who dedicate their lives to putting an end to Domestic Violence, there is much hope. Here are a few phone numbers that may help you or someone you know get out of their abusive relationship.

National Domestic Violence Hotline – 1-800-799-SAFE. You can get information on the nearest shelter or program in your area to get the help you need to escape your abusive relationship.

WEAVE/ Women Escaping A Violent Environment/ This organization serves the Sacramento area – 916-920-2952

CAAW/Committee to Aid Abused Women. This place I hold near and dear to my heart, it is the organization I went to, to get away from my abuser. These people are saints, just a wonderful organization. They serve the Reno area – 775-329-4150.

Also on their website, they list various upcoming charity events you can help out with and they also list ongoing volunteer opportunities!! Okay, now on to the rest of my Charities!!

Just in case you haven't been to this part of the website before, this is where you will find Charities that I personally have worked with or have seen in action. Each of them have helped to better the lives of so many people. The staff's and volunteer's of these organizations give their lives to their cause, and in a day of such selfishness, I find that to be incredible!

And now, onto a cause that is as near and dear to my heart as anything I can imagine... the men and women of the United States Armed Forces. Whatever branch you serve in, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts. If you want information on how you can help our brave women and men who serve this country and protect us every day, just go to the website www.americasupportsyou.mil. Once you log on the home page go to the upper left hand corner and click on “click here to see how you can help.” That is where you will find these amazing non-profit organizations that cover sooooo many categories... Send Packages, Help for the Wounded, Letters and Messages, Military Family Support, Phone Cards, and so much more. You will find so many ways you can help and be excited by all the ways you can help our men and women serving this fine country.

There is so much inner turmoil, guilt, disgust, power/control, loneliness, betrayal, just to name a few when you have an Eating Disorder, I know these are some of the things I felt with my Eating Disorder. This can be such a personal thing, reasons for having an eating disorder seem to vary from person to person so I wanted to make sure there were plenty of phone numbers to call and get help, get information or talk to someone who understands if you are not ready or ready to take that step. Thanks to all the wonderful listener's who called or e-mailed me with references.

"The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society" - Adults, teens, kids, there is no prejudice with this cancer. As a matter of fact every 5 minutes an American is diagnosed with leukemia, lymphoma, or myeloma. The Society is working toward finding a cure as well as providing support groups, public health and professional education along with community service programs. I truly enjoy raising money for this organization. They have really worked hard to come up with creative ideas and ways to get the community involved and money raised for such a worth while cause.

"Ride to Walk" is a non-profit therapeutic horse riding program for children with neurological disabilities.

What an amazing charity this is to work with, I have learned so much. The children have such great attitudes and strength. The parents, of my gosh, such wonderful people, never once have I seen them look at their child as if something was wrong with them, it's a beautiful thing.

What Ride to Walk does is take each child's individual need and match them up to a horse. On that horse the child rides while volunteers are on foot on each side of them and the horse and then there is a person who is leading the horse with a lead rope. The volunteers then help the child with his or hers individual exercises to help with such things as motor skills, posture, exercises to help them walk better,etc.. whatever their neurological disability is there is an exercise to help improve the child. It's so cool how the horse is also helping the child. If you live in the Sacramento area and would like to volunteer just call 916 - 434-0693, you don't have to be an expert horse person, the staff will train you on how to be around horses and if you have a child you feel would benefit from this program call the same number.

Help Oak Park Pre-School!!!

Oak Park Pre-school is in desperate need of donations. The school has been around since 1966 and was founded by Eta Gamma Omega Chapter, Alpha Kappa Alpha Inc. The school is free (that's not a misprint... it's free!!!) to children ages 3 and 4 whose parents otherwise could not afford to send their children to pre-school. By helping young children get a good start in a nurturing, caring environment, they are given a greater opportunity to be positive successful members in our community. Their curriculum consists of physical, mental, and cognitive development activities. They teach age appropriate behaviors and encourage self independence for the individual child. This amazing place does so much for the community. If you've been blessed in life and can afford to help out some amazing children who could really use it, or if you've been in a place in your life once where someone's helping hand was a turning point in your life and you want to give back, this is such a worthy and wonderful place to give your support. Please help to protect this most precious resource and donate what you can!

For information on how you can help, just call this number...

916-451-9498...

"Big Brothers Big Sisters" matches adults with young children to provide a one to one friendship to boys and girls, primarily from single parent homes. The Big Brother or Big Sister does not replace the parent or other family relationships. They enhance family life by providing friendship, support and guidance. The results of this program are incredible, children show an increase in self-confidence and motivation , an improvement in their academic performance, and better relationships with family members and peers. For the Greater Sacramento Area you can call 916-646-9300 or log on at http://www.bbbs-sac.org/. For other areas do a search engine on Big Brothers Big Sisters to find out if there is one in your community.

"Ronald McDonald House Charities" What an awesome group of people, with such dedication and compassion. If your not familiar with this charity, basically there is one in almost every town, normally located near a major hospital. Reason being, when a family has a tragedy occur with their child and the family finds themselves having to leave their home to be near their child in the hospital, Ronald McDonald house puts the family up in the house and is there to help guide the family through the hard time. All the families I have spoken with while doing fundraisers for this charity, say they have no idea what they would have done or how they would have gotten through their tough time without Ronald McDonald House. There are many levels of volunteerism if you would like to find out what would fit you and your schedule, in Reno call 775 - 322 - 4663 and in Sacramento call 916 - 734 - 4230 or check out rmhc.org for one in your area.
