Arnie's Movie Review Archives |

September 29th, 2008 Here's my review for... SLAPSHOT Ok, so this weekend a legend of film died. Paul Newman. I know a lot of you only knew that he had salad dressings. But he had a ton of great movies too. I didn't see most of them because they were all a bit too serious for me. But one of my all time favorite sports movies stared Newman. Slap Shot. A movie about a shitty minor league hockey team that had player/coach Reggie Dunlop trying to convince everyone that they were on their way to Florida. This is one of the funniest sports movies ever made. And by far the BEST hockey movie EVER!!!!!!!!!!!! There are really no stars in this movie besides Paul Newman who obviously owed someone a favor to do this piece of crap. But it turned out to be great. A movie where hockey players show up drunk to games and end up peeing on themselves when checked in a corner. A movie that introduced the world to the Hansen brothers. A trio of hockey goons that just wanted to fight. Sure they tried to make a remake of this with Stephen Baldwin and it really sucked, because NOTHING will ever top the original. Sure Newman had Cool Hand Luke, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, and a bunch of other movies, but I would have to say that Slap Shot was his greatest movie as an actor and I loved it.
