Rob's Dogs Weekend Getaway To Dogwoods Resort
December 17th, 2008

As we revealed earlier this year, when my wife and I travel, our German Shepherds either stay home and guard the house, or we sometimes leave Shep and Nellie in Garden Valley, CA, deep in the woods nestled between Auburn and El Dorado hills past the famous Forest Hill Bridge (most recently used in the Vin Diesel film “XXX).

By popular demand after months of badgering by dozens of loyal listeners, we happily revealed Shep and Nellie’s oasis in the forest in April and your response has been overwhelming! It’s called Dog Woods Resort. Owner and operator Theresa (or her sister Helen) are soooooo thrilled with all of the RAD listeners who have contacted them and so are Janell and I! It truly is the greatest place in the world for your dogs! Dog Woods can be reached at 530-333-2117. Or check out their website, www.dog-woodsresort.com

Here’s one of the 1 million reasons Shep and Nellie (and Janell and I) love Dogwoods Soooooo much. Look at all of the room they have in their own pen!

When they’re not in their own pen, they are free to roam the whole property, which as Nellie shows here, is festively decorated for the holidays!

Time to meet the cast of characters for the weekend. Here we have (left to right) a 5 month old Vizsla named Tucker, a Yellow lab named Jake and A red Bone coonhound named Blankie.

Check this out! Shep cloned himself! Actually, Shep is behind Nellie and next to Nellie is an 8 month old German Shepherd named Sheela.

How funny is this picture? Shep and Sheela stand back to back and look like an enormously long, two headed shepherd.

With all of the introductions over, its play time. Here we have some retarded form of keep-away/chase/tag.

Eventually, Shep and Nellie get tired of each other and find new friends for the weekend. Here, Nellie and Jake team up for a romp in the woods…

…While Shep took a fancy to Tucker the Vizsla…

…And Shep promptly began a weekend of torturing Tucker…

Quickly joined by his new look-alike, Sheela, who apparently, along with Shep spent as much time as possible ganging up on Tucker in a totally unfair wrestling match in the woods…

…and later in the leaves…

…and later in the grass.

Here’s an hysterical batch of time lapsed photos; watch as Shep herds Tucker by circling him, until Tucker finally totally submits and rolls over, knowing the playful attack is coming.

Here are a ton of random shots of the dogs playing, running, jumping and swimming…this is what they do all day long at DogWoods! No wonder they love it so much (and come home totally exhausted).

That is clearly NOT Shep…he would NEVER climb up like that…that’s that wanna-be Shep, Sheela, acting like an 8 month old.

During some down-time in their private run, Shep and Nellie discover pine cones for the first time, which apparently, is a fascinating moment in a dog’s life.

Later, Shep decided to play hide and seek with Theresa and Helen at DogWoods.

Shep and Nellie also had plenty of time to engage in some private hillside wrestling (notice Nellie generally gets her butt kicked because she is a girl).

All of that wrestling eventually leads to a nice swim at the pond.

Check out this timeline; first Nellie poses for some photos, then out of nowhere Shep the ham steps right in front of the camera and hogs the spotlight!

As always, we close with adorable photos of the two celebrity dogs, beginning with Shep.

And ending with the beautiful Nellie!
