Saturday August 16, 2008 at Yocha-De-He Golf Club at Cache Creek, CA

This was our special round of golf with listener Jason, who called the show in July to report his 3 year battle with brain cancer (which he continues to fight today). His one wish was that we would play golf with his brother, Eric, who joined us along with Jason and Eric’s wife Kim, and Dawn (all in the gallery) as we played. Jason had to head back to the room early to stay out of the heat, but we had a great day and really enjoyed the course and Eric and Kim. Dawn, we did not enjoy so much.

Rob’s Notes/Excuses:  I had never seen the course before and was very impressed. It’s amazing the way you can take a horrendously ugly part of California (a freak of nature in and of itself) and carve out of it a gorgeous casino, hotel and golf course. The layout is challenging yet fair and plays to all skill levels. Golfing with listeners and a small gallery gave me a few nerves on the first holes but once I settled down and remembered that I was better than everybody else, I hit the ball really well and enjoyed the course and the day.

OVERVIEW:    The Sea Ranch is located along the Pacific Coast south of Mendocino and about an hour north of Bodega Bay. It is described by some journalists as the “Pebble Beach of the north,” which is absurd and unfair. The sea Ranch is a nice enough place, but it’s nothing like Pebble. It’s essentially a very challenging target golf links style muni-course. We played the Blue tees, measuring 6219 yards with a 7am tee time.

OVERVIEW:    This was our traditional “hey we’re on vacation” round of golf played I  humid, smoky conditions with a high og about 99 and the sky covered in wildfire haze. At worst, the wind gusted to about a club’s length, but for the most part the day was still. Course management was poor this day as it took the three of us more than 4 hours to play 18 holes, waiting on terrible golfers in front of us all day.
