BECOMING SUCCESSFUL

Believe it or not, this is actually the easiest of the three. No matter what it is you are trying to be successful at (parenthood, landscaping, golf, career) the formula for getting there is the same. Whether or not you achieve success will depend entirely on your commitment to the plan. Here are the steps.

1) Define what you are trying to achieve. For example:
*Breaking 80 consistently on the links.
*Replacing all of the carpeting in the house with wood floors.
*Doubling my income in my current line of work in less than 5 xxyears.

2) Define how to do that, and the tools you need to do so. (If you don't know the answer, seek out people who have done the things already and find out. It's that simple.) For example:
*New golf clubs, lessons from a pro, 10 hours per week practice time.
*A miter saw, 3 "How-to" books, $2,500 and 3 free weekends.
*Two college courses, a better attitude at work, and 20 hours overtime per month.

3. Commit to the plan and to yourself and execute the plan.

Sounds too simple, right? It really is as simple as those three rules. What isn't simple is actually carrying out #3. Most of us will make excuses like "I'm too tired," or "Life is getting in the way."

Whatever it is that I am trying to achieve, I am obsessed with succeeding. Whether it's having fun with that days round of golf, or perfectly cooking dinner that night. You will have to decide how intense you want to be with each of your goals. Here are some incredible books that have helped me:

"Atlas Shrugged" Ayn Rand
"Good to Great" Jim Collins
"The Illustrated Art of War" SunTzu, translated by Thomas Cleary
"Life is a Contact Sport" Ken Kragen
"The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People" Stephen Covey
"Difficult Conversations" Stone, Patton and Heen
