Rob's "Wine of the Week" Archives So here is my wine review for the week of October 23rd, 2006... BV (Beaulieu Vineyard) 2003 Tapestry & 2002 Georges Latour Reserve
Description: Two wines for the price of one again for this week as I continue what may be aptly called my series "how the mighty have fallen." Last week, we profiled the fact that Franciscan and Jordan continue to disappoint and this week we discuss the once widely popular and truly great BV, short for Beaulieu Vineyards. Its winery is right on Highway 29 near the Rutherford Grill and has long been a crowd pleaser, like their wines. Unfortunately, a few years ago BV got some rot, produced by a rare but deadly insect that can ruin wine, and so far they have never recovered. How to Get it: Both bottles are available at the wineries in Napa, sometimes at Sam's Club and Costco, occasionally at Bevmo, in many restaurants and on-line. How Much: For the Tapestry, per bottle, the winery wants about $50. For the Georges Latour, it's closer to $100. My Thoughts: The Georges Latour was, for many years in the late 1990s, a class-A top of the line red wine blend, while the Tapestry has always been one of those bottles that delivered far more than the price indicated. Neither is ture any longer. Both of these wines continue to be terribleā¦not just unacceptable for their price, but truly terrible. They reek of lawn clippings and deliver thin, headache inducing finishes. Both were dumped in my sink after completing my tasting notes.
