Rob's "Wine of the Week" Archives

So here is my wine review for the week of September 18th, 2006...

CAYMUS CABERNET SAUVIGNON SPECIAL SELECTION 2003

Description: The 2004 cabs are starting to hit the market so if you’re lucky, you may be able to score a few excellent bottles of the 2003 vintage for much less than regular asking price. Caymus is a world renowned cab name whose top end red wine is their annual special selection. With rare exception, this is always one of the best cabs of the year, thought quite pricey.

How to Get it: It’s available at the winery in Napa, occasionally at Bevmo and on-line.

How Much: Per bottle, the winery wants $136.

My Thoughts: Classic Caymus special, although not quite ready to be drunk yet. This is a nice, dark, full almost chewy cabernet with a finish that is not necessarily smooth, but rather bold and rich. I enjoyed this bottle now, but suspect it will be much better in 3-5 years. Look for a lot of flavors that blend together well like blackberry offset by herby earthiness, and mocha offset by delicate but distant vanilla. This wine has an enormous finish with a lot of tannins. I suspect it will be better in 2010.

Overall Score: This a very good bottle of wine, although for the price I would drink Phelps Insignia any day of the week. For a change, if you’re willing to spend more than $100 for a great cab, this is a great choice. However, for the price, this is simply an average top end cab. 3 vines.
