Rob's "Wine of the Week" Archives

So here is my wine review for the week of March 9th, 2009...

CAYMUS CABERNET SAUVIGNON SPECIAL SELECTION 2006

Description: I’m taking a break this week from reviewing bargain wines to help us all get drunk through the recession, to instead renew the annual tradition of tasting the latest top shelf release from Caymus, a legendary Napa winery that consistently produces a stellar red wine, priced accordingly every year.

How and when I drank it: Saturday, March 7, 2009, at my house.

How to get it: Caymus, blessed by its reputation, is readily available at most wine specialty stores and even some grocery store top shelves. The wine can also be found at a multitude of on-line locations and at their terrible winery in Napa. The Special selection is somewhat hard to find, but not impossible. Caymus wines are found on almost any great restaurant’s wine list and is almost always a far better choice than some shitty, overrated bottle of Opus One.

How Much: The Caymus special selection, which for years was always uniquely priced at $138, is now, and has been for a couple of years $160. Inflation sucks.

My Thoughts: There is one noticeable flavor missing from this year’s Special Selection, and it’s one of my favorites in an enormous Napa red; vanilla, a necessary component in my opinion of a glorious finish to a big red wine. This year’s Special Selection comes filled with dark fruit aromas and flavors ranging from wild berry to dark cherry; rather than being balanced by vanilla on the finish, this wine is countered with herbal and darker chocolate and cola flavors. The good news is that often times a young red combines those latter flavors into a smooth, beautiful vanilla cream ending.

Overall Score:Yet again this is a very large, very young product from Caymus that should be put away for at least 2-3 years. It is more than fine now, but shows the potential to be glorious with some aging.   3 ½  Vines.
