Rob's "Wine of the Week" Archives
So here is my wine review for the week of April 20th, 2009...
DOMAINE CHANDON UNOAKED CHARDONNAY 2007

Description: Domaine Chandon is more known for its sparkling wines and its gorgeous winery in Yountville as you enter Napa Valley from the South on highway 29. Chandon does make a few non-sparkling wines and this new “unoaked” label plays on the current backlash against oaky chardonnays.
How and when I drank it: Sunday April 19, 2009, at my house.
How to get it: Domaine Chandon’s sparkling Brut wine is available seemingly everywhere and they have been expanding their shelf presence in many stores lately with their other wines. They sell all of their wines at their winery and on their website.
How Much: The winery lists the bottle at $22
My Thoughts: To be fair, I am totally against this dopey new trend of making chardonnay wine more fruity and less reliant on oak, toast and butter. It’s a crime…if I wanted a fruity white wine, I’d drink a cremant or sweet Chablis for goodness sake.
As for this wine, it’s fine; the problem with these overly fruity chardonnays is that they’re too sweet and get old too quickly. This is a pleasant enough glass of wine, relying on apple, pear, apricot and other sweet fruits, but after one glass, there’s no need for more.
Overall Score: Perhaps a nice glass of wine on a hot day, but drink two glasses and you’re headache-bound.
