Rob's "Wine of the Week" Archives

So here is my wine review for the week of February 12th...

Darioush Signature Cabernet Sauvignon 2004

Description: The jury is still out on the Napa 2004 reds, as they are only now beginning to be released. Having spent last weekend in Napa, I am noticing that the early line is that the 2004 vintage is magnificent, and you have to be a real idiot to not make great wine from this year. However, in my extensive tastings I have found that while some wines emerging from the '04 lot are amazing, others are mediocre at best.

How to Get it: Many wine merchants carry it, it's available on-line and at the winery in Napa. Darioush has become a very in vogue, cosmopolitan wine over the past few years, buoyed by its' gorgeous architectural wonder of a winery along Silverado Trail.

How Much: About $70.

My Thoughts: Having spent an entire weekend tasting 2004 reds, it became easy for me to distinguish between those wineries that have clearly nailed the vintage (Del Dotto, Flora Springs, Caymus, Luna) and those who have not. Darioush, which lives off of its winery and a few decent vintages, is still trying to live up to its reputation and this wine won't help. It's an ok Cab. Certainly it's not a bad wine by any stretch of the imagination, but at $75 per bottle, this wine should blow you away right away. Instead, it's somewhat thin, fairly flavorless and quite un-impressive.
.

Overall Score: This would be a great cab for $15. At this price, it's simply not worth it and makes you wonder if they're charging such exorbitant prices not because their wine is worthy, but because they have to pay for their building. 1 vine.
