Rob's "Wine of the Week" Archives
So here is my wine review for the week of November 17th...
DARIOUSH 2005 SIGNATURE CABERNET SAUVIGNON

Description: Darioush is a relatively new Napa Valley winery named after the proprietor, Darioush Khaledi. Having visited the winery more than once, I can tell you that Darioush’s Middle Eastern roots clearly run deep within him, as his lavish winery exudes the region in architecture and design.
Darioush generally produces mid to upper level wines which I have always found to be average, but not great.
How and when I drank it: Saturday, November 15 at my house.
How to get it: Darioush is still relatively hard to find in most stores but can be ordered from their website or at the winery in Napa.
How Much: The bottle is $80 from the winery.
My Thoughts: In keeping with the exceptional 2005 cabs coming from Napa Valley, this is a big, nearly overpowering young red wine that has tons of potential but is before its time at this point. This cab is tightly wound, but exhibits some clear vanilla flavor potential, accented by a cinnamon finish. For now, though, the enormous tannins produce mineral and earth flavors, indicating a wine that needs time to develop. I allowed the wine to decant for half a day and tried it again and it was better, but still far from its potential. Buy a few bottles and put them away for a few years.
Overall Score: Since 2005 is showing tremendous quality when you find it in Napa cabs, I suggest grabbing a bottle or two of this and making a note on it to not touch it until at least 2013. Honestly, this thing needs five years of cellaring and will then be a stunning red wine. For now, it’s simply undrinkable and tight. Don’t waste the great potential. 4 vines
