Rob's "Wine of the Week" Archives

So here is my wine review for the week of May 3rd, 2005...

Del Dotto "the David" 2002

Description: The 2002 vintage of Napa Reds is just being released and shows some surprisingly positive results. Many major wineries including Pride, Phelps and Duckhorn are receiving rave reviews. Del Dotto is still a little known Napa winery that deserves accolades for its quality. The David is their premiere blend of premium reds.

How to Get it:
I got this bottle from the winery in Napa. Some wine specialty stores and on-line sites will carry it as well.

How Much:
At the winery, I paid $75 per bottle. It is generally a $75 bottle in stores, $100-150 in restaurants, although finding this bottle on a wine list is rare.

My Thoughts:
The 1999 David was the best ever. It had that rare quality of a red whose first taste created the sensation of bubbles dancing on the tip of your tongue. It's probably not fair that I now judge all versions against the 1999. The 2002 is a very good bottle that gets better as it is allowed to breathe. It has mellow vanilla flavors and a great finish with very few tannic "bites" on the tongue. The aftertaste rings of light chocolate and clean, not herby earth flavors.

Overall Score: I would rate the 1999 David
As a 5 vine wine hands down. The 2002 version that I am reviewing for this week is a little thinner and not as full, but compared against red wines in general is an excellent bottle. I am happy to pay $75 for the flavors that come from this bottle and I am sure it will be a much more complex wine in 3 years. On my 5 vine scale, I give The Del Dotto "The David" 2002 a score of 4 vines.

Del Dotto "The David" 2002 =
