Rob's "Wine of the Week" Archives
So here is my wine review for the week of September 22nd...
GEYSER PEAK CABERNET SAUVIGNON 2005

Description: Geyser Peak has attempted to build its reputation as a low priced Napa Cab that can still deliver a more than acceptable Sauvignon. They describe their Cabs as “luscious and intense,” which is usually a code for “young, tight and un-refined,” used by wineries that are more interested in selling cases of mediocre wine than producing the highest quality.
This leads me to my complaint about Biba Restaurant and the overall inability of Sacramento to have ANY five star restaurants; while it is filled with fine food, the wine list is appallingly bad (and the service is mediocre at best). The idea that Biba serves only one type of cabernet by the glass and that type is Geyser Peak is embarrassing, especially beside such wonderful food.
How and when I drank it: Wednesday, September 17, 2008 at Biba Restaurant in Sacramento.
How to get it: Geyser Peak is readily available at almost all grocery stores, wine stores, some warehouse stores and through the winery website.
How Much: The bottle is $18 from the winery and can be found as low as $12 in some stores.
My Thoughts: As you’d expect, the wine is tight and unbalanced. The fruit-forward design of the cab produces dark berry and cherry flavors at first, leading to leathery earth flavors and a very tight, dry finish. Far from being lush, luscious or full bodied, this is a red wine that almost makes you pop your tongue off of the top of the roof of your mouth, hoping that you’ll open up the flavors buried deep inside. The lack of complexity of the wine, however, promises that the flavors will never arrive.
Overall Score: This is exactly what I would expect from a bottle of $18 Napa Cab, It is drinkable, but not much more. I wouldn’t serve it on a Tuesday night at home, let alone at a fine dining restaurant.
