Rob's "Wine of the Week" Archives

So here is my wine review for the week of January 8th...

PAUL HOBBS BECKSTOFFER TO KALON CABERNET 2003

Before I get to my official review, I would like to offer my sincere, personal thanks to the boys at Pro City Mortgage for providing this week's wine review via their very generous Christmas gift to me. It continues to be a pleasure to work with such great supporters of the show.

Now on to my official review...

Description: Paul Hobbs has become a solid Napa Cab producer, most notably consistently providing the market with limited supplies of high end cabs, thus increasing their price and value. In the past 5 years, the trend in Napa cabs has become to find very expensive, very elite bottles and savor every drop, whether it be from Colgin, Screaming Eagle, Shafer, Ladera or Paul Hobbs people are spending well over $200 per bottle on high end boutique Napa reds.

How to Get it: If not already sold out, available at the winery in Napa, sometimes at Bevmo, in some restaurants, occasionally on-line and at wine specialty stores.

How Much: On line wine merchants are asking $250.

My Thoughts: This bottle more than lives up to the hype and the exorbitant price. Whether or not it's worth twice a bottle of Insignia, Foley or Pride Reserve costs is debatable, but there is no denying that this is a Cadillac amongst Napa reds. The body is full yet smooth, the finish is classic, lingering and silky and the flavors are perfectly blended, ranging from cherry to cocoa to oak to vanilla. There is also a fantastic faint tinge of tobacco that compliments this wonderful bottle meant for only the finest occasions. My reason for drinking it was that it was a Wednesday.

Overall Score: Napa cabs don't get better than this, but they do come in better values. The only thing keeping this from a perfect score is its ridiculous price tag, which when compared to other great Napa reds is still just a little arrogant for my blood. 4 ½ vines.
