Rob's "Wine of the Week" Archives

So here is my wine review for the week of May 19th...

HONIG CABERNET SAUVIGNON 2005

Description: Producer Brandon was out drinking one night recently (shocker) and ran into some jerk from Honig winery who also listens to the show. One week later, some wine appears including a bottle of their 2005 cab. The winery makes only Cabs and sauvignon blanc from their family property in Rutherford north of Napa.

How and when I drank it: Sunday afternoon, May 12, 2008 at my house

How to get it: The winery sells it online. I am new to the wine so beyond that, my scope of its availability is limited.

How Much:
On the winery’s website it’s $40

My Thoughts:
I grabbed this bottle on Mother’s day and sort of muttered “let’s see if this is worth a crap,” having done no research on the wine or winery. I just knew it came from a listener and was a Napa cab. A few hours later, I was stunned to see that the bottle is $40. Once I tasted the wine, I figured it was yet another of the new, high end boutique red wines that permeates Napa Valley now and demands north of $100. For $40, this is an exceptional wine. The body of the wine is full and lush, yet not overpowering. There are tannins at the finish, but they are smooth, balanced and not firm. The flavors are exceptionally subtle and approachable, filled with vanilla and brighter fruit flavors, yet perfectly balanced. Thus, we have a cab that is neither fruity nor acidic, but is a very nice bottle of wine.

Overall Score:
I am not sure if they charge $40 per bottle so that more people can and will try their wine, or rather because they simply don’t know how good their wine is. I am hoping it’s more the former and that they have decided to buck the trend of charging outrageous prices just because it seems to give some bogus air of credibility to a Napa cab. I would drink 100 bottles of Honig before I’d even spit in a bottle of Opus One. As Napa cabs go, this is a great wine…when you factor in the $40 price tag, it’s a steal of a home run. 5 vines.
