KELLY FLEMING CABERNET SAUVIGNON 2004

Description: Napa Valley has almost 400 wineries now, as compared to fewer than 200 less than 10 years ago. One of the areas that has most exploded has been small “cab only” houses which produce just great big red wines. Some have become the new standard bearers on the region, like Colgin, and others like Guilliams are just happy to make great wine on their family farm. Kelly Fleming is closer to the second description, making only Cab, grown on 12 acres in Napa.

How and when I drank it: I discovered this wine at the new Paul Martin American Bistro restaurant in Roseville, CA, which may be the Sacramento area’s best up-scale restaurant. Prior to the opening of Paul Martin, only La Provence carried that water (although they have been inconsistent the past year), far overshadowing (in terms of quality) Crush 29, Carver’s and Ruth’s Chris. Kelly Fleming, it turns out, is the wife of Paul Fleming, who is the “Paul” half of Paul Martin American Bistro. They sell the wine by the bottle ($94) and the glass ($25)

How to get it: Other than at Paul Martin, I only know of the winery’s website which sells wines by the bottle.

How Much: At the winery, $84

My Thoughts: This is a very well made, balanced big cab that isn’t harsh on the tongue or the palette. The initial flavors are dark ruby fruits, finished off with a nice almond vanilla end on the back. I have had four glasses in two weeks and they’ve all been consistently excellent.

Overall Score: This is a very well made, balanced big cab that isn’t harsh on the tongue or the palette. The initial flavors are dark ruby fruits, finished off with a nice almond vanilla end on the back. I have had four glasses in two weeks and they’ve all been consistently excellent.
