Rob's "Wine of the Week" Archives So here is my wine review for the week of February 19th... Luna 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon
Description: Luna has really come along in the last 5 years to become a premiere Napa Valley wine maker, and sadly, their prices are beginning to reflect their success. Luna still makes an amazing pinot Grigio every year and their Merlot is once again a winner in 2004 as well. The jury is still out on the Napa 2004 reds, as they are only now beginning to be released. Having spent last weekend in Napa, I am noticing that the early line is that the 2004 vintage is magnificent, and you have to be a real idiot to not make great wine from this year. However, in my extensive tastings I have found that while some wines emerging from the '04 lot are amazing, others are mediocre at best. How to Get it: It's available on-line and at the winery in Napa as well as occasionally at Bevmo and other wine merchants. Also, many restaurants have begun to carry a wide variety of Luna winesl. How Much: About $80. My Thoughts: Having spent an entire weekend tasting 2004 reds, it became easy for me to distinguish between those wineries that have clearly nailed the vintage (Del Dotto, Flora Springs, Caymus) and those who have not. During our tasting at Luna we sampled 7 different wines and loved 3, didn't like 2 and found 2 to be good wines, but absurdly overpriced. This wine falls into the latter category. Even with the Napa red explosion of this century, you have to be amazingly ballsy to ask $80 for a cab that is this mediocre. The nose is dark fruit and even some chocolate, but the finish is too filled with fig and almost prune flavors. Overall Score: This wouldn't even be a great cab for $15. At this price, it's simply not worth it and makes you wonder if Luna has gotten too big for itself to be able to honestly assess their missteps. 1 vine.
