Rob's "Wine of the Week" Archives So here is my wine review for the week of June 12th, 2006... ROBERT MONDAVI CABERNET SAUVIGNON 2003
Description: 2003 is proving to be a year similar to 1998 and 2000, very inconsistent. Some wineries are producing great wines, but they are hard to find and just because a winery was great in past years is not proving to be a guarantee of quality in the 2003 vintage. How to Get it: Mondavi remains readily available on the top shelf of most grocery store wine aisles, at Bevmo, and usually at Sam's and Costco where the price is cut by at least 25%. How Much: It's about $25 in stores, $17 at Costco. My Thoughts: Mondavi lost its way years ago and has been fighting its way back since a total shake up recently. I have found their cab to be adequate to good, but often thin on the finish. This 2003 bodes well for the future of the Mondavi label, not because it is a spectacular cab, because it isn't, but because it is a good cab in a year of hard to find good cabs. The flavor is similar to the Mondavi formula of herb, earth, oak, etc, but there is a tannic bite on the finish that has been missing in Mondavi lately. I expect this wine to age appropriately and even bought a half case to continue to consult throughout the years.
