Rob's "Wine of the Week" Archives

So here is my wine review for the week of May 18th, 2009...

GREG NORMAN CALIFORNIA ESTATES CABERNET 2006

Description: Yes, that Greg Norman, the golfer. Norman has received critical acclaim for producing affordable wines of better than average quality over the years. He also has used his name to make his wines readily available and accessible.

How and when I drank it: Wednesday May 13, 2009, at my house.

How to get it: Costco and Sams almost always carry a few varieties of Norman wines, many grocery stores sell it and Bevmo and wine shops are filled with it.

How Much: The winery lists the bottle at $15, but it can be found many places for $10.

My Thoughts: Even though Norman is getting his wines from the Northern Coast of California, he is not trying to create a traditional big California red wine. Norman likes his lower priced wines to be approachable and enjoyable for every day people. This wine comes close, but misses the mark. The flavors are a little too thin and unbalanced, focusing on herbs and oak, but abandoning fruit, vanilla and chocolate. There is a peppered finish and the wine has a nice bell pepper aroma, but it’s definitely only a $10 wine.

Overall Score: For the price, I can’t complain, but I’d rather spend  little more and get a lot more quality.
2 Vines.
