Rob's "Wine of the Week" Archives

So here is my wine review for the week of October 9th, 2006...

Opus One Napa Valley 2003

Description: I believe that Opus One is the most consistentlyl overrated red wine in the world. Anytime I hear someone order Opus One I laugh out loud at their ignorance. This has never been a bad wine, but it so incredibly and without question NOT worth its price that it is laughable. A combination of the Mondavi and Far Niente wineries (two of the most prestigious) this wine has never deserved the acclaim it gets in my opinion. IN a blind tasting with friends two years ago Opus One finished 5th out of 6 bottles. Opus was the most expensive by far of them all.

How to Get it: It's available at the winery in Napa, occasionally at Bevmo and on-line.

How Much: Per bottle, the winery wants about $165.

My Thoughts: This is a typical young bottle of Opus. It is tight, oaky and has a chewy lingering aftertaste which will open up and subdue with aging. I have tasted enough Opus to know that this is another typical bottle from them. The wine in two years will be a red wine that is just fine. Not bad at all, and no where close to spectacular. That would all be well and good if it was a $25 bottle. To charge $165 for yet another mediocre effort should be embarrassing to all who work there and anyone who drinks it.

Overall Score: When placed next to the 2003 Insignia (which I will review later this month) which costs less, Opus One looks, tastes, feels and acts like grape juice. What a joke for the price. 1 vine.
