Rob's "Wine of the Week" Archives

So here is my wine review for the week of October 27th...

PAUL HOBBS CABERNET SAUVIGNON 2005
BECKSTOFFER TO KALON

Description: I was first introduced to this fantastic wine by my friends at Pro City Mortgage who bought me a bottle for my birthday years ago.

Beckstoffer to Kalon refers to grape growing regions in Napa Valley that make up this 100% cabernet.

How and when I drank it: Saturday, October 25, 2008 at my house.

How to get it: Paul Hobbs is one of the many high-end Napa Valley wineries producing top notch varietals at top tier prices. One of the constants of such wineries is their wine is hard to find and harder to get. People can claim a spot on the winery’s list via their website and have first right of refusal to their various releases.

How Much: The bottle is about $250 from the winery

My Thoughts:
As was true with the 2002 vintage I drank last, this is a stunning bottle of wine. Though it is 100% young cab, it is already an amazing drink, showing signs of tobacco and leather at the beginning, but full, well blended and balanced notes of vanilla on the finish. The tannins are firm and true, but nicely refined for such a young wine.

Overall Score:
This nearly black-in-color wine is a monster red wine that deserves to be drunk by only the most devoted Napa Red wine fan. Timid palettes won’t appreciate the wine, but those of us who crave enormous Cabs from Napa will find the excessive price to be stunningly fair.
