Rob's "Wine of the Week" Archives
So here is my wine review for the week of November 6th, 2005...
Pride 2002 CABERNET SAUVIGNON

Description: If you follow my love of wine on a regular basis, you know that Pride is my favorite overall winery, producing amazing wines year after year. As for the vintage and varietal, some wineries still haven't released their '02 cabs, while others are getting ready to unveil the '03. The cycle for cab releases is about 18 months.
How to Get it: Pride is not a very accessible wine, found at the winery, sometimes at Bevmo and on-line if you're lucky. On the bright side, many restaurants now carry Pride on their wine lists.
How Much: It's about $60 at the winery, $125 in restaurants.
My Thoughts: Pride suffers from their own success in that we now expect so much from them that anything less than near perfection is just not ok. While this wine is getting its' usual rave reviews (Wine Spectator gave it a 92 out of 100) I can't agree, yet. Don't get me wrong, this is, as you would expect from Pride, a great red, but not as great as the hype would have you believe⦠yet. I am hopeful that this wine will be amazing in 3-5 years. It is tight and tannic (for a Pride wine) at this time, but underneath you can feel the amazing body and flavors wanting to burst out. Buy this wine on its' reputation and shelve it for 3 years. I bet you'll be blown away.
Overall Score: Clearly this is a wine that needs to age and open up. As the bottle sat open the wine improved, showing that a few years on its' side should make this another exceptional effort from Pride. Unlike others, I can't classify it alongside the 1999 and 2001 cabs, but I will give it a solid 4 vines.
