Rob's "Wine of the Week" Archives

So here is my wine review for the week of March 27th, 2006...

Provenance 2003 Cabernet Sauvignon

Description: I was introduced to this mid-priced treasure last year on a trip to Napa with our chiropractor, “Doctor” Ron (who can be reach at 916-435-1522, by the way). We had a bottle while lunching at Mustard’s and I was blown away by the quality for the price. Now that the 2003 is readily available, let’s see if it was a one-time wonder or if it’s a new fave?.

How to Get it: Sam’s Club seems to always have it, along with Wine specialty stores and the winery in Napa.

How Much: It's about $25 per bottle.

My Thoughts: Unusual for a cab, in the sense that the first few tastes were the best. My first ¼ glass was all vanilla with a lightly fruit finish and no bite. Heavenly. As the bottle opened up, the tannins firmed up the tastes and added some earth, cinnamon and a dryness to the finish. Bottom line, this is another winner from Provenance and at $25, it’s a steal. Very complex flavors and body.

Overall Score: You simply can’t beat this wine for the price. This is a cab that would stand next to cabs 3 or 4 times it’s price. Since the Cab market is flooded with greatness, this wine must be fairly placed in the second rung of great choices, but that’s pretty impressive for $25. 4 Vines.
