Rob's "Wine of the Week" Archives

So here is my wine review for the week of August 12th...

REGUSCI CABERNET SAUVIGNON 2005

Description:A few months ago in this space, while documenting a recent visit to Napa, I reviewed the 2004 Regusci merlot and was pleasantly surprised. Regusci, 7 years ago, was a premiere red wine producer in the area that went straight into the crapper circa 2003. Since then, they have been struggling to regain their form and the 2004 merlot showed promise.

How and when I drank it:Friday evening, August 3 beginning at  6pm at the restaurant “StripSteak,” in Mandalay Bay. I had two glasses with dinner, pairing it with a lobster cocktail, rib eye steak and blue cheese au gratin potatoes.

How to get it: It’s available at some grocery stores, BevMos, some wine merchants, on-line, and at the winery in Napa

How Much: At the winery, about $50 per bottle. At Strip Steak it is served by the glass for $13

My Thoughts: Having tasted two different glasses, these notes are consistent with what I experienced. For such a young cabernet, the overall wine was very smooth with only soft tannins and just a little bite. This is one of the rare Cabs that I would recommend drinking right now, rather than aging (certainly the wine will still be good in a few years but why wait if it’s good enough to drink now?) The flavors are a mix of some cocoa, subtle vanilla and dark fruit with a velvet texture.

Overall Score: This is a very nice surprise and shows serious signs of a Regusci comeback. I hadn’t planned on getting a second glass of the same wine but the first impressed me so much I had to be sure. 4 vines
