Rob's "Wine of the Week" Archives So here is my wine review for the week of May 14th... Silver Oak Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley 2004
Description: One of the premiere Cadillac names of Napa valley reds, Silver Oak has vacillated between being overpriced and overrated to being the best wine of an entire region in an entire year. For a time early this decade, Silver Oak seemed to be moving towards the "Opus One" region of Napa; a big name with almost no quality to back it up. How to Get it: It's available at most Bevmos, some grocery stores, some wine merchants, on-line, and at the winery. How Much: At the winery, $100 per bottle. My Thoughts: While still young, this wine presents all the great qualities of a "velvety" red, anchored by the all important vanilla undertones. Two hours after being opened the wine really changed and opened up which shows promise that in 18 months this red will have matured into the big, smooth monster it shows it can be. For now, the fruit flavors are slightly too ripe, which will hopefully be balanced by the growing vanilla and oak flavors that are clearly there. Overall Score: To buy it now and drink it now would be a waste. Buying it now and saving it for late 2008 would, in my opinion, be a solid investment in a really good (maybe great) cab. At $100 though it's not a cheap risk. Though this may turn out to be a wonderful red, at the price it's just a score of 3 Vines.
