Rob's "Wine of the Week" Archives So here is my wine review for the week of October 23rd, 2006... Stag's Leap Fay Cabernet 2002 and...
Description: Two wines for the price of one for this week, and of course, there's a reason why. Jordan and Stag's Leap have both established themselves as solid Napa wine producers of great red wines, cabs in particular. While the Stag's quality has diminished in the past 5 years because of too many other attampts of varietals, their upper-end "fay," and "SLV" lines have remained solid. How to Get it: Both bottles are available at the wineries in Napa, sometimes at Sam's Club and Costco, occasionally at Bevmo, in many restaurants and on-line. How Much: For the Jordan, per bottle, the winery wants about $45. For the Stag's Leap Fay, it's closer to $80. My Thoughts: The reason for lumping these two together is that it's another clear indication of the changing of the guard in Napa Valley. Winemakers come and go often nowadays and as the valley has exploded from less than 100 wineries in the 1980's, to more than 400. Quality is going to suffer and finding the right wines is going to be more of an art in such a marketplace. The Jordan is thin, somewhat chalky and way too fruity for a big cab. Nothing like we've been accustomed to. This is the second year in a row the Jordan cab has sucked. The Stag's Leap Fay is just god awful, and I know that I didn't have a unique bottle because I tasted two of them and also saw reviews of similar opinion from fellow wine reviewers. This wine tastes like undercooked vegetables ground into dirt and sitting on a cow's back. Just horrible
