Wine Reviews

Rob's "Wine of the Week" Archives

So here is my wine review for the week of January 23rd, 2006...

St. Clement Oroppas 2003

Description: The Oroppas is a solid wine, year after year, usually receiving a score of at least 90 from most reviewers. It is a blend of red wine grapes that usually produces a silky, easy to drink full bodied red.

How to Get it: This wine is found in wine specialty stores, some of the warehouse stores and from the winery, although the 2003 has not yet been released. The 2002 is still available.

How Much: It's about $50 per bottle.

My Thoughts: Being a member of their wine club, I got a few early bottles of this vintage, and it certainly drinks like a young Oroppas. This wine is a little tight and has difficulty showing it's true potential at this time. I can sense the vanilla, nutmeg and chocolate notes that are there, but at this time they are suppressed by spice and tobacco, which over time, will blend nicely to create a typical great Orropas. Buy it now, but drink it beginning in 2007.

Overall Score: If I were a coward, I'd say it's too soon to tell, but I am a bold wine drinker and can make a call on this wine now. This will be an Oroppas that will not disappoint, but will also not be named Wine of the Year. As a fan of this wine, I'll buy a case and check in with it again in a year. 3 ½ vines at this time.
