Rob's "Wine of the Week" Archives So here is my wine review for the week of August 19th... TREFETHEN CABERNET SAUVIGNON OAK KNOLL DISTRICT 2003
Description:Trefethen is one of the first wineries along highway 29 as you enter Napa from the South. They consistently produce average to better-than-average reds depending on the vintage. How and when I drank it:Saturday morning August 4, beginning at 830 am in our room at THE HOTEL at Mandalay Bay. I had two glasses by 10am, and two more later that afternoon after the wine had opened up and breathed for a while. How to get it: It's available at some grocery stores, BevMos, some wine merchants, on-line, and at the winery in Napa. How Much: At the winery, about $50 per bottle. My Thoughts: For a cab grown 4 years ago, it was surprisingly thin at first and very dry as well with a ton of tannic bite. It even left a residue of taste on the palette when swallowed. After it opened for a while, the subtle flavors of vanilla and dark cherry emerged along with some chocolate and smoke notes. As it opens up this wine develops a nice flavor while resting on the tongue. The flavors right now lend itself to a snack of smoked almonds on the side. Overall Score: This is a very tight red that needs to either be decanted and left to breathe for hours before drinking or just laid down in the cellar and left alone for a few years before it gets opened. Even then, however, I doubt that it will rise to the level of other $50 Napa cabs. As per usual with Trefethen, this is an average wine, not a great one. 2 ½ vines.
