Wine Reviews

Rob's "Wine of the Week" Archives

So here is my wine review for the week of June 5th, 2005...

Viader 2002

Description: Viader is not a well-known wine outside out of hard-core Napa lovers and visitors. It is a consistently wonderful red-wine blend that in 2002 is 51% Cabernet Sauvignon and 49% Cabernet Franc.

How to Get it: I got this bottle from the winery for $90. It has just been released, but is available from the winery, most wine specialty stores (although it sells out quickly), and on some restaurant wine lists.

How Much: It is generally a $100 bottle in stores, $150 200 in restaurants.

My Thoughts:
This drinks much like a cabernet with a vanilla finish that is full, and not at all dry with no bite on the tongue. Napa's great red wine makers have truly grasped the miracle of what red wine lovers want; a flavorful, smooth wine that had a big, full finish. This blend reminds me of the Cadillac of Napa wine, Phelps Insignia. It is not quite as full, flavorful or smooth but it is damn close. The more the bottle opens, you get great lingering flavors of white chocolate and even a little amaretto. A great wine.

Overall Score: For $100 per bottle, this is what wine should of that price should be. Only Insginia and a few others (Pride cabernet reserve for one) can match. This wine for body, flavor and smoothness. Bring this bottle out for a special occasion and impress the Hell out of someone. On my 5 vine scale, I give this wine a 4 ½ .
