Rob's "Wine of the Week" Archives So here is my wine review for the week of November 26th... VIADER 2005
Description: For a period in the mid to late 1990’s Viader was considered one of Napa Valley’s premiere red wine blends, standing out in both quality and high prices. Viader has always produced very little wine, mainly focusing on big, bold red wines. Nearly all of their vintage was lost a few years back in a warehouse fire, but even before then they were not receiving the same top-end praise their wines were accustomed to. At least, not by the masses of the industry. I have always loved Viader and enjoy their wines greatly, although for nearly $100 per bottle, the barometer of quality is, of course, raised measurably. The 2005 Viader is a blend of 69% Cabernet Sauvignon and 31% Cabernet Franc. How and when I drank it: T-t-t-t-t-Tuesday afternoon, November 13, 2007. I opened the bottle at Noon and began drinking at 12:30. Couldn’t wait. How to get it:Viader is still readily available at many BevMo’s and wine merchants, it easily accessible on-line and direct through the winery and found on a handful of restaurant wine lists. How Much: Viader is still readily available at many BevMo’s and wine merchants, it easily accessible on-line and direct through the winery and found on a handful of restaurant wine lists. My Thoughts: Having just reviewed the 2004 Cabernet vintage a few weeks back, I am starting to segue to the 2005 reds and am finding myself pleasantly surprised. The 2004 vintage as a whole was the best in Napa since 1999 and while the early 2005 I have tasted are, admittedly, from Cadillac wineries (Pride, Foley, Del Dotto), they are blowing my socks off as well. This wine is no different. It is young, yet completely rounded and softened at the edges. It delivers a wonderful flavor with a soft, smooth finish that is just, well, elegant.
