Rob's "Wine of the Week" Archives

So here is my wine review for the week of October 30th, 2005...

WHITEHALL LANE 2002 CABERNET SAUVIGNON

Description: Some wineries still haven't released their '02 cabs, while others are getting ready to unveil the '03. The cycle for cab releases is about 18 months and this was my first chance to taste Whitehall's '02 effort.

How to Get it: Whitehall Lane is a very accessible wine, found at Costco, Bevmo and even some grocery stores.

How Much: It's about $30 at Costco.

My Thoughts:
The good news about this cab is that it's a great wine for those who don't like a lot of bite and tannins win their red wine. There is almost no hint of brandy or tobacco In the smell or taste of this cab. That of course means that the bad news is for lovers of a full, hearty red wine that needs to be chewed. This is not that type of Cab. Judging it on its' own merits, this is a pretty good cab. Smooth, easy to drink with a ton of vanilla flavors, just very little body to it.

Overall Score: This is a great cab for people who usually can't handle cabs because of the flavor and punch to them. For the rest of us, this a really good merlot that isn't very fruity. A nice wine to grab when you know what you're getting, and for around $30 it's worth what you're paying, as long as you feel like a thin cab. I award it 3 vines.
