Wine Reviews

Rob's "Wine of the Week" Archives

So here is my wine review for the week of June 5th, 2006...

CHATEAU STE. MICHELLE COLUMBIA VALLEY MERLOT 2003 and...

CHATEAU STE. MICHELLE INDIAN WELLS MERLOT 2003

Description: Since I began drinking wine in 1992, Chateau Ste. Michelle has been one of my favorites. Their basic, Columbia Valley wines are great "weekday" wines and they also produce a line of upper-end reds from the Cold Creek and Indian wells vineyards that are consistently good. Unfortunately, in the early 2000's, quality waned and the wines were no longer even worth a Tuesday night.

How to Get it: Ste. Michelle is wildly available at Bevmo, many grocery stores and restaurants, and online at Costco.

How Much: It's about $12 in stores for the Columbia valley merlot, up to $20 for the Indian Creek Merlot, both of which I tasted this week.

My Thoughts: These wines are more of what I expect from Chateau Ste. Michelle. The Indian Wells bottle is actually a blend of mostly Merlot, and some Cab and Syrah, making it a little more full and fruity than normal. The Columbia Valley is typical Ste. Michelle, fruity and medium body and a very smooth finish. A great merlot for beginners. For the price difference, I would simply stock up on the Columbia Valley and open it any weeknight.

Overall Score: Neither of these bottles will blow you away, but nor will they at all disspoint you. They are good, solid merlots. 3 vines for each.
