Rob's "Wine of the Week" Archives
So here is my wine review for the week of March 27, 2005...
Coppola Merlot 2003

Description: Merlot can be fruity, or dry and bold. There are medium intensity merlots And more, bold, intense full bodied merlots. Coppola makes some great, upper-end wines (Rubicon), and a lot of crappy ones too. Their merlot has always been a reliable, low priced acceptable merlot that has fruity and spicy flavors. For years this was a regular "swill" wine in my collection, although the 2001, 2002 versions were lame and I stopped buying it.
How to Get it: I found this bottle at Sam's Club in March, 2005. You can get it at the winery in Napa, most grocery stores, wine specialty shops and most Beverages & More
How Much: At Sam's, I paid $8 per bottle. It is generally a $12 bottle in stores, $15-20 in restaurants.
My Thoughts: This is better than the last two years and has earned another look by me. This version is more dry than past Coppola merlots with pleasant, though chalky aftertaste on the tongue. There is a unique underlying , subtle flavor to this wine that resembles a smoky meat taste. The more you taste it, the more you realize, though
that this is not a fruity merlot. This wine is smooth, with lots of spice flavors like sage and mint.
Overall Score: On my 5 vine scale, I give this wine 3 because it fits that level of my scoring scale perfectly. At $10 per bottle, this is a great value, everyday wine.
