Rob's "Wine of the Week" Archives
So here is my wine review for the week of May 16th, 2005...
Duckhorn Merlot 2002

Description: Merlot can be fruity, or dry and bold. There are medium intensity merlots and more, bold, intense full bodied merlots. Duckhorn almost always produces solid red wines.
How to Get it:I found this bottle at La Provence restaurant in Roseville for $67. Wine specialty stores and on-line sites will carry it as well.
How Much: It is generally a $40 bottle in stores, $50-75 in restaurants.
My Thoughts: This drinks much like a cabernet with very subtle brandy overtones and a vanilla finish that is full, and not at all dry. Not this wine has no bite, making it a very easy drink. Four of us at dinner had a total of 3 bottles, never wanting to change to a different wine. This is a merlot that is perfect for people who find cabernets to be too big, with too much acid and bite.
Overall Score: This is bigger than traditional Merlot but better than the bastardized merlots we've been getting during the Last 10 years as wine makers catered to non-wine drinkers who Wanted fruity, even sweet merlot. This is a great cabernet-light That warrants drinking again. On my 5 vine scale, I give this wine a 4.
