Rob's "Wine of the Week" Archives So here is my wine review for the week of May 8th, 2006... Duckhorn Merlot 2003
Description: Duckhorn's Merlot is legendary in the Napa Valley, although as the winery has spread itself out (dabbling in many new varietals) in has, at times, seemed to have spread itself too thin as well. How to Get it: Almost any restaurant of note carries Duckhorn Merlot. It is also readily available at Bevmo, on their website and through most wine specialty stores. I had this bottle at La Provence in Roseville, CA. How Much: about $75 per bottle in restaurants, $35 in stores. My Thoughts: As the 2003 vintage continues to seep our, it continues to be a hit/miss year, which often results in normally great wines winding up as merely pretty good, though appearing great compared to the rest of the vintage's mediocre efforts, which is what has happened here. This offering from Duckhorn seems to be restrained. The finish is not as full of vanilla as usual and the fruit flavors are not as pronounced. The wine's balance is as great as ever, but with all things slightly muted.
