Rob's "Wine of the Week" Archives

So here is my wine review for the week of February 20th, 2006...

DUCKHORN MERLOT 2003

Description: Long revered for their red wines, Duckhorn has become inconsistent of late. As they have branched out beyond their signature Merlots, they have sacrificed some quality. Still, they are a winery to always be monitored and tasted as they continue to produce an occasional great wine.

How to Get it: Widely popular, Duckhorn can be found in any credible wine specialty shop, many restaurants and at the winery.

How Much: It's about $50 per bottle.

My Thoughts: The 2003 reds are just starting to seep out and they seem to resemble the 1998 vintage in this way; overall the vintage may be slightly off, but there will be some great wines to be had if you pick them right. This merlot is another disappointment from Duckhorn. Any winery asking $50 for Merlot has to produce greatness, but Duckhorn especially, hounded by its reputation for such. This merlot is dry (not fruity), tight and had a bite on it that merlot shouldn't have. It tastes young and firm. Even with some aging, I expect this wine to be less than average.

Overall Score: This is what I would expect from a $10 cabernet, certainly not a $50 Merlot. 1 vine.
