Rob's "Wine of the Week" Archives

So here is my wine review for the week of August 10th, 2009...

DUCKHORN MERLOT 2006

Description: 10 Years ago, Duckhorn was considered one of the Cadillacs of Napa Valley red wines, particularly merlot. Since then I have found their quality to be inconsistent at best as they’ve branched out and begun making far too many varietals, few of them excellent.

Duckhorn is still a reliable bottle of wine, but has not been spectacular for quite a while

How and when I drank it: Saturday, August 8th at my house.

How to get it: The winery sells it online and because of their prominent name Duckhorn can often be found at some grocery stores and most wine shops.

How Much: The winery lists the bottle at $50

My Thoughts: For $50, another average effort from Duckhorn. The wine is pleasant with some lushness to it; There are some notes of cherry and dark berry and the wine balanced but rather boring, even by Merlot standards.

Overall Score: There’s nothing really wrong with this wine, but for $50 it should have a pop or je ne sais qua to it that is lacking. Very basic, and thus, overpriced.
