Wine Reviews

Rob's "Wine of the Week" Archives

So here is my wine review for the week of July 17th, 2005...

Ferrari Carano Merlot 2003

Description: Merlot was the craze in the late 1990's, but the truth is that it's a fairly lame red wine by most vintners. It takes a special wine maker to make a great Merlot and Ferrari-Carano has a great track record.

How to Get it: I got this bottle at the Romanza Italian restaurant inside the Peppermill in Reno. Fortunately, since the Carano family still lives in Reno, this wine is easily accessible in most grocery stores, wine stores and restaurants in Northern California and Nevada.

How Much: It is generally $25 from the winery, $40-60 in restaurants.

My Thoughts:
This is yet another very good merlot from Ferrari-Carano. They make many wines, but their Fume Blanc, Chardonnay, Tresor and Merlot are their best and most consistent. This drinks mostly like every other Merlot they've made. Smooth, no harsh tannin bite, a little vanilla aftertaste, and not too full. A well made Merlot that makes a nice appetizer to a big cabernet.

Overall Score: For the price, it's a great drink and it's always nice to have a few wines you can go to at any time for a consistently good glass. On my 5 vine scale, I give this wine 4 vines.
