Rob's "Wine of the Week" Archives

So here is my wine review for the week of January 17th, So here is my wine review for the week of May 15th, 2006...

Greg Norman Estates Shiraz 2003

Description: We got a listener mail letter last week asking about the differences between "Shiraz" and "Syrah," which promoted this review. The difference, by the way, is almost nil. With a "z" on the end, it simply means that the wine has been made in a traditional Australian style.

Greg Norman, the golfer, has made quite a name for himself in the past ten years by producing high quality wines at affordable prices. This partiucluar wine was just awarded "Wine Spectator" magazine's "Smart Buy" of the month.

How to Get it: Almost all wine and beverage stores along with the warehouse stores seem to carry this line of wine. It is readily accessible.

How Much: It's about $15 in stores.

My Thoughts: I have honestly admitted over and over again that I am a Napa snob. The more I taste wine from elsewhere in the world, the more I love wines fro the Napa/Sonoma area. This Australian Shiraz furthers that notion. Here we have a highly regarded, highly rated red that, in my opinion, is just fine. I wouldn't dump it out, but I wouldn't buy it again. The fruit flavors are nice, there's even some spicy peppers on the alleged finish, but the whole wine is thinner and lacking in body compared to a Napa Syrah.

Overall Score: For $15, it's hard to punish this wine since the quality is clearly acceptable. I wouldn't choose it, but I also can't pan it. 3 vines. It's simply mediocre.
