Rob's "Wine of the Week" Archives
So here is my wine review for the week of July 10th, 2005...
Nickel & Nickel Darien Vineyard Syrah 2003

Description: Syrah has become an amazing grape in Napa, surpassing merlot as the "hip, it" wine. Syrah is usually quite dark in color, but far more fruity than cabernet.
How to Get it: I got this bottle from the winery itself. Nickel and Nickel is starting to show up on more restaurant wine lists and at some specialty stores.
How Much: It is generally $40 from the winery, $75-100 in restaurants.
My Thoughts: This is a typical good syrah. The color is dark and inky. It smells floral and spicy. The flavors when drunk are fruity, with a little toast on the very end. It drinks quite smoothly, although finishes a little flat.
Overall Score: A $40 wine should perform a little better than this. It's not a bad bottle, but it doesn't blow one away either. On my 5 vine scale, I give this wine a 3.
