Rob's "Wine of the Week" Archives So here is my wine review for the week of November 20th... Paloma Merlot 2004
Description: This is one of my favorite small wineries in Napa, situated on Spring Mountain Road overlooking most of the valley and run by two retired old married Texans. They make only Syrah and Merlot every year and their wine is difficult but not impossible to find. How to Get it: If not already sold out, available at the winery in Napa, sometimes at Bevmo, in some restaurants, and occasionally on-line. How Much: The winery wants about $55. My Thoughts: Good News, Bad News. We'll start with the bad news which is that this is not Paloma's best merlot. The good news is that 2001 Paloma Merlot was named "Wine of the Year" by Wine Spectator, so we're comparing against a very high bar here. This year's merlot maintains the quality I have come to expect from Paloma. It is a full merlot, with dark flavors of chocolate, tobacco, some aged leather and a smooth but tight finish. For a merlot, the finish is surprisingly wound up and I am going to wait a year to have another bottle.
