Wine Reviews

Rob's "Wine of the Week" Archives

So here is my wine review for the week of March 20th, 2006...

PEJU SYRAH 2002

Description: Syrah continues to catapult itself to the top of the trendy red wine list, and for good reason. Napa valley is producing some amazing Syrahs, which traditionally are as full bodied as a cab, but without as much bite and traditionally featuring more fruit flavors.

How to Get it: Wine specialty stores and the winery right on Hwy 29 in Napa, which I have never been a fan of.

How Much: It's about $30 per bottle.

My Thoughts: This is a young, but good Syrah. Great Syrahs can be drunk immediately or with aging, this one clearly needs some time to mature, as it possess a strong tannic bite that somewhat overwhelms the fruity, boysenberry flavors. Give it a few years and try it again, but expect it still to be only a good syrah.

Overall Score: For $ 30, I expect more from a Syrah. This is not bad by any stretch of the imagination, but it is also not a $30 bottle of wine. Peju has never impressed me and they continue their perfect streak with this bottle. 2 vines.
