Rob's "Wine of the Week" Archives So here is my wine review for the week of May 30th, 2006... Pride Merlot 2004
Description: If you're a regular reader of this space, you know that Pride is one of my favorite wineries in existence. Yes, I review them often, but deal with it. The exciting thing here is that this is my first taste of the 2004 vintage. 2003 clearly is going to be a year similar to 1998 and 200, a hit/miss year with a lot of disappointing wines. The smart money is to save up for the 2004, 2005 vintages which, according to early tastings are fabulous. Let's see... How to Get it: Pride's popularity and quality make it a hard find. I get my allotment by being a loyal customer for many years past. Sometimes you can find it online or at wine speciality stores and more and more restaurants are carrying it. The winery at the top of Spring Mountain always has wine on hand and is worth the trip (it's where I proposed to my wife, after all). How Much: It's about $50 in stores. My Thoughts: This Merlot bodes well for the 2004 vintage. While it is true that Pride seems to ALWAYS make great wine, regardless of the challenges faced by other wineries, this merlot shows the signs of past great vintages. This is a full bodied, smooth, almost velvety merlot with layers of vanilla, slight cinnamon overtones and a finish that provides no bite, but a fantastic finish with very slight lingering light chocolate on the back of the tongue. Perfect, just perfect.
