Wine Reviews

Rob's "Wine of the Week" Archives

So here is my wine review for the week of March 5th...

Regusci 2004 Merlot

Description: Regusci was in the process of making fantastic red wines at the turn of the century and has rebuilt itself as a star Napa producer. Something happened along the way though and they recently have garnered scores as low at 79 for their Merlots and Cabs. A beautiful, friendly winery along the Silverado Trail, my wife and I still pop in every time we're in Napa, even if it's just to visit the 5 adorable dogs that run around freely on the grounds.

How to Get it: It's available on-line and at the winery in Napa as well as occasionally at Bevmo and other wine merchants.

How Much: About $30.

My Thoughts: Having spent an entire weekend tasting 2004 reds, it became easy for me to distinguish between those wineries that have clearly nailed the vintage (Del Dotto, Flora Springs, Caymus) and those who have not. I am beginning to equate the 2004 vintage to the 1998 and/or 2002 vintages which were years that many wineries struggled though, but those who made great wines, made REALLY great wines. Therefore, I am pleasantly surprised to say that somehow, Regusci, despite their recent struggles seem to have nailed the 2004 merlot lot. I was expecting another disappointment, but I got a smooth, flavorful, fruit/vanilla mixture that held up beautifully to other "04's we tasted. I even bought 3 bottles.

Overall Score: This is not the greatest merlot ever, or even for the 2004 vintage, but it is a return to my favorite product from this winery. Vibrant on the tongue and smooth on the finish, I find it to be a very approachable merlot for any red lover. 3 vines.
