Rob's "Wine of the Week" Archives
So here is my wine review for the week of September 6th, 2005...
Stag's Leap 2002 Merlot

Description: Stag's Leap is an old school name which has fallen on hard times of late as they continue to produce mediocre wines. They have gone the way of Mondavi as they try to make too many wines, rather than focusing a select group of great wines.
How to Get it: I got this through my membership in Stag's Leap's wine club. Their merlot is pretty accessible, found at some warehouse stores, wine stores and even grocery stores.
How Much: It's $31 from the winery, between $28-35 in stores, and $50-75 in restaurants.
My Thoughts: This is one of those merlots that acts bigger than a traditional merlot. It has the fruit flavors you expect, mainly plum and cherry, but it also has some bite to it, mainly in the forms of some spicy tannins, which makes its' aftertaste a little tart, in a good way. This is not a merlot for those who love the fruity light flavors. This is a more complex merlot with lots of flavors. If you love cabs, but don't feel like that much depth, this is a good bet. .
Overall Score: On my 5 vine scale, This barely gets 3 vines, because of the price.
