Rob's "Wine of the Week" Archives

So here is my wine review for the week of January 30th, 2006...

St. Supery Merlot 2003

Description: Located along Highway 29 as you enter the heart of Napa Valley, St. Supery has grown tremendously in popularity in the last 5 years. They make a lot of wines, some great, many fair.

How to Get it: This wine is found in some grocery stores, many wine specialty stores, some warehouse outlets, on-line and at the winery.

How Much: It's about $25 per bottle.

My Thoughts: St Supery suffers from what I call the "Mondavi Syndrome," a situation in which a winery simply makes too many types of wine and therefore produces a lot of mediocre products, rather than choosing to make just a few products, all of which are spectacular. This merlot is indicative of that. It's fine. Not great, not bad, and not worth $25. I'd buy a case of Rombauer Merlot long before I'd touch this wine.

Overall Score: While fruity with chocolate notes, this is simply an average merlot. St Supery makes an amazing Meritage which seems to be taking their focus off of their other reds. For the price, this scores only 2 vines.
