Wine Reviews

Rob's "Wine of the Week" Archives

So here is my wine review for the week of March 12th, 2007...

Toad Hall Cellars 2004 Bodacious

Description: First of all, this is actually an off-shoot of Flora Springs winery and can be tasted at their location next to Dean and Deluca in St Helena. This wine is actually a straight 50/50 blend of Napa Cab and Merlot.

How to Get it: It's available on-line and at the winery in Napa as well as occasionally at Bevmo and other wine merchants.

How Much: About $30.

My Thoughts: Having spent an entire weekend tasting 2004 reds, it became easy for me to distinguish between those wineries that have clearly nailed the vintage (Del Dotto, Flora Springs, Caymus) and those who have not. Flora Springs seems to have an amazing lot of red wines on the way this year, and the Bodacious may prove to be the most surprising of them all. This wine, poured for us almost as a "please, try this," throw-away, stopped my wife and me in our tracks. It is luscious at first taste with a perfect combination of chocolate and fruit flavors, and big, wonderful, smooth full finish of vanilla and just a hint of cinnamon.

Overall Score: Anytime my wife looks at me and says "we have to get some of this," I know that we have found a winner. Her palate is far more sensitive than mine and that, combined with the fact that we decided to stop buying wine for a while when we ran out of room last year for all of the bottles we have, means that when she loves a wine, she really loves a wine. 4 ½ vines
