Rob's "Wine of the Week" Archives
So here is my wine review for the week of January 21st...
BEAULIEU VINEYARD (B.V.)

Description: B.V. has a prominent place along Highway 29 as you leave Napa and head into Rutherford, most notably resting right next to Rutherford Grill. In the 1990’s, B.V. was producing a variety of high and low end wines, including their Cadillac wines, the Georges Latour reserve, all of which received critical and layman acclaim. Late in the decade, B.V. acquired a sort of wine “fungus” that began a deteriorating process that lasted years. I came across a B.V. sale and decided to try their latest offerings to see if they have turned things around.
How and when I drank it: Over the course of the week of January 14-18 at varying times of the day.
How to get it: B.V. is still readily available in most grocery stores, BevMo, lots of wine shops, on many restaurant wine lists and at the winery in Napa. A lot of people outside of the “wine world” still order and buy it, not knowing about the problems the winery experienced and are later disappointed in the quality.
How Much: The bottles I drank range in price at the winery from $17 - $95
My Thoughts: I still have a few bottles of 1997 and 1999 Georges Latour, before the vine rot took hold and thank goodness for that. Apparently, B.V. has irreparably damaged and continues to struggle. All of their wines taste thin, musty and, if drunk to any level of excess (two glasses or more) provide an instant headache.
Overall Score: I drank the 2004 Cabernet Napa, the 2004 Georges Latour, and the 2004 merlot and they all sucked. I poured more down the drain than I actually drank. The winery as a whole gets one vine.
